Only a fraction of colors visible to the human eye can be printed by traditional methods. The CMYK ink set falls short because pigments used to make the inks fail to perfectly absorb the colors they are supposed to absorb, and to transmit the colors they are supposed to transmit.
In 2005 RR Donnelley introduced HARVEY, a color selection tool and printing system that puts thousands of clean, bright or saturated colors at the disposal of graphic designers.
HARVEY uses standard process inks with between one and four additional color drivers, depending on the gamut to be reproduced. We fortify CMYK colors with select red, green, blue or orange inks, on a conventional lithographic press, with second-order stochastic screening.
Marketers and designers can use this powerful new tool to grab attention, evoke an appropriate emotion or nail an "unmatchable" product color. HARVEY can be used in creating screen builds in any mainstream application or incorporated into existing four-color subjects with brilliant results.
