The school textbook market is continuing to evolve, with publishers developing more and more titles with state-specific versions. Along with concerns over price, quality, and schedule, publishers are increasingly focused on ensuring during production that state-specific content shows up only in the versions where it is designated. From editorial, to composition, to prepress, the production of versioned titles with multiple layers of content requires additional assurances to minimize the risk of errors before they get to press.
RR Donnelley's Book Publishing Services is responding to this need by issuing updated guidelines for including versioned content in textbooks. These guidelines were built on common industry practices as well as RR Donnelley's extensive experience over the last several years with versioning. By following the process described here, customers can produce targeted versions of their textbooks in the most trouble free manner. To be successful, this effort will require industry support not only from RR Donnelley's customers, but from compositors and other print suppliers as well.
